Leafcutter
2011-02-12
The leafcutter ants were one of the highlights of Costa Rica for me. Our first time walking into the rainforest, we found the trail being used by a very busy column of leafcutters: a highway of moving green leaves. Having seen them on nature documentaries for years as a child, this experience was a little like turning a corner and finding yourself on Tatooine, while Luke Skywalker is just parking his Landspeeder. Leafcutter ants harvest leaves to feed a fungus farm they build underground. The fungus is their food source.
