In the course of the next morning, we discovered that Jonathan's rear wheel had a small but menacing crack in the rim. This necessitated a switch to hitch-hiking: we found ourselves standing at the side of the road, thumbs out, feeling not a little foolish. But being vulnerable, and sometimes foolish, suffering the necessity of putting yourself in the hands of strangers, is what differentiates travel from tourism. Finding a ride took about 5 minutes. The men who picked us up and fitted our bicycles in the back of their pickup were incredibly friendly and we owe them a big debt of gratitude which nature dictates that we must return to another stranger sometime in the future. We also owe a big thanks to
Fountain Flat Trading Post for their hospitality and help.
